Pekerau History

Pekerau School, located approximately 30 kilometres south of Hamilton, was officially opened on 3 February 1958 with a roll of 263 pupils, initially known only 'Te Awamutu No. 2 school'. ‘Pekerau’ the official name was given to this school on 17 April 1958, was supposed to be an abbreviation of Pekapekarau, the early Māori name for the area. The spelling should have been ‘Pekarau’ but was mistakenly written as

Pekerau.

Pekapekarau means ‘a multitude of bats’.

We were visited by the Education Review Office in July 2018, who highlighted a number of systemic faults within our school.  A result of management and governance issues within the previous 3 years since EROs last visit.  In May 2018, a new Principal was appointed and tasked with leading Pekerau School through a longitudinal review process.  ERO will once again review our school and report their findings in Term 3 2020.  We look forward to sharing the positive report with you later this year!
