At Pekerau School there are a number of programmes operating to cater for the learning needs of the children, especially in literacy development.
An Oral Language group operates in the junior school. This group is for children identified as at risk on entry assessment and /or at 6 years. Children who are speakers of English as a second language take part in these oral language groups as well as individual sessions, catering for their specific needs.
A Parent – tutoring programme has been set up for Year 4 children to assist in developing an enjoyment and enthusiasm for reading. Children in Yr 5 and Yr 6 will be targeted, once more parent tutors have been trained.
Children in Yr 4, 5and 6 experiencing difficulties with reading are catered for through a Tape Assisted Reading Programme. This involves both work at school and listening to a taped story at home.
At Pekerau we have a growing number of children on the school roll with physical disabilities. As a result we have become familiar with the various help agencies provided by the Special Education Service. e.g. Speech Language Therapist, SES Physiotherapist, Deaf Advisor, Visual Resource Teacher.
Pekerau School is also serviced by a supportive team from the Resource Teachers of Learning and Behaviour.
Teacher Aides work in classrooms assisting teachers with targeted children and their needs.
Cross grouping amongst year groups for subjects such as reading, writing and maths has allowed children to work with a group of similar needs children and allows teachers to plan appropriate programmes of work for a narrower band of abilities, therefore catering for children’s learning needs in a more effective and efficient way.
